Holiday insurance – getting it right

slip-up-709045_1280

When you are going on holiday abroad holiday insurance is a must and most people are use to factoring this cost into their trip, however there are still people who simply look for the cheapest cover possible, and the issue with this is that should you need to make a claim you can be stung by extra costs or insurance companies refusing to pay out in certain circumstances state on their terms and conditions.

Here’s what to look out for when getting your travel insurance:-

ALWAYS read the full terms and conditions of any policy, it may seem like boring legal jargon but it’s important before you sign that you have read and understood exactly what you are covered for.

Ensure that you are covered from the start of your journey right up to when you return home, most claims are made in the actually travel part of the journey rather than the main body of the holiday.

Ensure that your insurance covers a suitable amount for lost luggage or damage to your property during transport.

Check the excess that you would need to pay out on a claim is not too high, high excess will bring down the initial cost of the insurance but is not worth it if it’s too high to bother making a claim on.

What to do if you’re not happy with your hotel room

There’s nothing more frustrating than checking into a hotel for the start of a great holiday to find that the room that you have been allocated is not up to scratch.

Some people to avoid confrontation will simple put up with this and just make a note not to stay in the hotel again but I really feel that if you are paying for a product and a certain level of services that is what you are entitled to and you should raise any issues you have to avoid ruining your holiday.

The first thing to do if there is a few minor issues, such as cleanliness issues or not enough of something in the room, is to go to reception and tell them which room you’re are in and what is needed. Be honest with them, if you are not happy in the room that you are in ask to switch rooms and state what you require in the room (as per what you paid for on booking).

If the hotel is not being particularly helpful then ask to speak to a manager and tell them, calmly but firmly that if the issues cannot be resolved and the room that you have been given is either not fit for purpose or not as it was advertised then you will be going elsewhere and not paying for the room. If the hotel tries to levy any charges on you for doing this simply explain that you would be happy to go to trading standards with your complaints or publicise on social media/trip advisor if they would rather.

Even the most difficult hotel staff won’t want the bad publicity so sometimes this can just get you the resolution you were after.

Are you getting the best price for your hotel?

rates

With so many different booking websites available offering the ‘best hotel deals’ and ‘cheapest room rates’ it can be hard to know which one will genuinely offer you the best deal.
The problem is that most of the independent booking websites are paid a fee by the hotels to advertise discounted rooms on their website, therefore not all booking sites have the same hotels on their books so comparisons can be hard to get.
My advice would be to choose 3 websites and check the prices of your preferred hotel, then once you have found the cheapest deal write down all the details of the offer along with the website that the deal is on and call the hotel directly.
Once you get through to the booking line state the details of the deal that you have found online and ask them what they can offer you if you book with them directly?
Most hotels will be keen to persuade you to do this as it saves them paying a fee to the booking site, this fee can be used then to further discount your direct booking with them.
Some hotels will offer you the same deal if you book direct but may (if pushed a little) throw in a free bottle of wine in the room or a discount on dinning with them.
It’s always worth asking as if you don’t ask then you definitely won’t get!

Star Castle Hotel, Scilly

One of the best holiday locations in the UK, the Isles of Scilly offer crystal clear waters, sandy beaches and loads of places to discover and explore. For those of us used to the orange glow of light pollution there’s the promise of a stunning view of the stars on clear nights.

The Star Castle Hotel offers one of the best places to stay on the isles. Located on the main island of St Marys, this 16th century castle has 38 rooms and a wide range of facilities. There’s plenty to see and do on St Marys, and loads of great restaurants well stocked with local seafood.

Regular boat trips make visiting the other islands easy, so you’ll find more than enough to keep you busy. Main attractions are the Abbey Gardens, lighthouse boat trips and the chance to see animals like dolphin, seals, basking sharks and occasional rare visiting birds.

Finding accommodation that is family friendly

If you have children (especially younger children) you will always have to consider the location and accommodation that you are choosing to stay in when going away a little more than perhaps you would if you were going with friends or as a couple. There are many family friendly holiday destinations all over the world, some are designed with children very much in the forefront such as Butlins and some that just offer a little more in the way of convenience or family entertainment.

One of my main pieces of advice when booking a family holiday is to go off recommendations or reviews. A place can appear very suitable on the surface, but often the experience can be a little different. If you ave any doubts always talk to the accommodation providers first and explain your situation, ask them what they have in terms of facilities and entertainment and if there are any restrictions concerning children (such as not being allowed in the bar or restaurant after a certain time).

Packing advice

When packing for a trip abroad it can be tempting to think that you will need much more luggage allowance than is normally allocated however this need not be the case with these handy tips.

Choose a light case – It’s always good to be aware that some suitcases, particularly hard shelled ones with wheels can weigh quite a lot and can take up valuable weight allowance so always buy a light but sturdy case ideally made of fabric so that it’s easy to pack and store.

Roll your clothes – if you fold each item in your case it will not only take up more room but it will also get creased really easily, to stop this simply fold then roll your clothes and pack them in to every nook and cranny.

Make the most of your hand luggage allowance – most hand luggage allowances are quite generous so if you have heavy items such as shoes or electrical good then pop them in your hand luggage instead.

And if you still have too much luggage to carry why not send your luggage ahead using a parcel company, it can sometimes work out cheaper to do that than to carry extra baggage on your flight so well worth looking into.

What to check when chosing a hotel

caesars-palace-585098_1280

If you are booking a hotel to stay in for a holiday, it is essential that you read a few different reviews to get a true picture of what it is like. Ideally you want to read a number of reviews on a few different websites to be able to make a fair judgement of what the hotel is like. Beware of sites that only show good reviews (hundreds of reviews all giving 5 stars) as these may not be actual genuine reviews, and have been created by the hotel owners, staff or friends.

Don’t get too hung up on the specific issues one person has had if no one else mentions them as a problem as it may just have been a one off or a particularly picky customer. Always check to see what people have said about the cleanliness, comfort of the beds and the food that is on offer, as these things can make or break a sty in a hotel.
